I’m still digesting the things I learned at the Transforming EDU conference when I was in Las Vegas this month.

One of the panels that I was attending was on Maker Projects. I was prepared for them to talk about tinkering, problem-solving, and inter-disciplinary learning.  But this discussion looked at an entirely different side of the value of Maker Projects for young people.

Girls at Fire Tech Camp

We were shocked this week when we read a BBC report about the gender gap in engineering - a mere 8% of engineers in the UK are female. This did not reflect our experiences of the hundreds of enthusiastic, talented and tech-savvy girls we've welcomed to Fire Tech Camp over the past few years so we thought we'd dig a little deeper to find out how we compare.

Fun with Engduinos!

Earlier this Autumn we met with a team at UCL who have been developing the Engduino. We are hardware enthusiasts and this is a great addition to the hardware quiver! We started using Arduinos last year with teens - the plain vanilla Arduinos are almost limitless in their potential - but they do require some programming and set up skills and patience.
