Fire Tech is proud to announce the launch of five brand new tech courses to support young people aged 9 to 17 to learn the technologies that are shaping the world around us.
Course topics include ‘Adventures in Artificial Intelligence’, ‘Junior Cyber Security’ and Startup a Tech Startup’, and will be running across the UK over the Easter and Summer holidays at locations including Imperial College London and Cambridge University.
Unlike other courses, Fire Tech will include real-life applications of artificial intelligence, including computer vision, introduce ethical concepts behind AI, and explore cutting-edge technologies including IBM Watson. Students learn from expert tutors from some of the UK’s leading universities, and benefit from small class sizes of a maximum 8 students per class.
Leading the way in K12 Artificial Intelligence education
In February 2020, research by Tortoise Intelligence into the AI investments made by a group of 54 countries indicated that $97.8 trillion USD has been spent on AI between 2014 and 2019, while recent research by Gartner suggests artificial intelligence will create 2.3 million jobs in 2020. There is clearly a pressing need for early-years education about AI.
Fire Tech’s work in tech education has not gone unnoticed. This week, the company was shortlisted as one of the top-10 technology companies in the UK by the National Technology Awards 2020.
Jill Hodges, founder and CEO of Fire Tech, started the company 7 years ago when she realised that she couldn’t find a way for her own kids to learn about tech skills, either in or out of school. Existing courses only seemed to teach Microsoft Office! She wanted to provide a place where kids like them could get their hands dirty and experiment with a wide range of technology concepts.
Now, Fire Tech has helped over 30,000 young people across the world to create and experiment with technology, potentially launching them as the future innovators, technologists and digital leaders the world needs.
Jill Hodges commented, “the need to educate young people on how to use AI effectively – and responsibly – could not be more urgent. That’s why we’re so excited to be launching these new courses this month, to help children across the UK be inspired by the incredible potential of these new technologies to shape the world around them in positive ways.”
Michael Cotter, Head of Learning at Fire Tech, added “our team have spent the last few months researching the most exciting and relevant topics to include in these courses. We can’t wait to give students those ‘eyes light up’ moments that these technologies can bring!”
The five new courses are:
Adventures in Artificial Intelligence (Junior)
In this course, students will get an introduction to the world of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). They will build their very own A.I. models using sound, numbers, text and images, using the latest super-smart technology.
Adventures in Artificial Intelligence (Senior)
Artificial Intelligence is the hottest topic in tech. Learners will build A.I. models to control autonomous vehicles and smart homes, and try to predict a movie’s success based on its poster. The ideal course to inspire further learning in A.I.
Junior Cyber Security: Spycamp!
In this course, we take a whirlwind tour of some of the aspects of keeping secrets online, looking at both historic and current methods. Become a digital detective and find messages hidden in plain sight using tech!
Startup a Tech Startup
The opportunities for starting a new business in technology are unlimited and the rewards can be high, but the basic principles of how to begin are simple. Our tech-loving, business-savvy instructors will reveal all, in some of the most exciting and entrepreneurial classes you’ve ever had.
Mobile Video & Hollywood Special Effects
Want to create impressive videos that will blow your friends’ minds? This course lets students use their own phone as the camera to light and compose scenes, capture video and then apply visual effects techniques to make them awesome!
