What forms of payment do you accept?

Credit and Debit Cards
We currently accept any credit or debit card with a MasterCard, Visa or American Express Logo.

Childcare Vouchers
We do also accept Childcare Vouchers from all major providers.

My child will not be nine years old at the start of the course- can they still attend?

We can only welcome children into our stand alone camps and courses who will be nine by the first day of the course.  Unfortunately we do not have any flexibility for this particular limit.

What are the course instructors like?

Programme Leaders have a strong background in education coupled with technical expertise in the area they teach. They are supported by Camp Tutors, who are most frequently talented Computer Science and Engineering students from the UK’s leading universities.

All our instructors undergo in-person training from the Fire Tech team in the curriculum of the course they are teaching, in the Fire Tech mission and values, and in our Child Safety Policies. We select our instructors on technical expertise but also for great communication skills and a real passion for their subject.

What is the tutor:student ratio?

We are committed to maximising the support students receive from tutors on our courses. That means a maximum of 8 students per tutor on all of our courses.

What is a typical day at Fire Tech Camp like?

A typical day begins with children arriving between 9.45 and 10am. There is then a warm-up activity and an introduction to the next step in developing projects. Project work will last all morning with a break for a snack. Lunch lasts for 60 minutes.  Campers will keep following the course and working on their projects for the rest of the afternoon.

The Fire Tech curriculum team works tirelessly to design new and innovative programmes that give students the best possible experience. That means:

AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE: We give students real-time teaching and constant support, while using interactive digital tools like video calls, collaborative whiteboards, and screen sharing. What better way to learn about technology than to use it?

LEARN THROUGH PLAY: kids love our courses because they learn through play. Activities and games are scheduled into the day, and we also include sunshine breaks and movement activities to make sure students do not sit for long periods.

EXCITING CONVERSATIONS: Kids are naturally curious. We love to prompt conversations that help them understand the world around us and develop critical thinking. We might look at examples of how modern companies use robots or wonder how Pac Man got its shape.

NEW FRIENDSHIPS: real human connection has been a big part of why kids are enjoy our courses. In between lessons, they might introduce their pets, talk about the posters in their room or just show their colourful personalities.

A MASTERPIECE TO TAKE HOME: Fire Tech has a project-based pedagogy, meaning everyone graduates from Fire Tech with something tangible that they created to share proudly with family and friends.

Do you offer shorter days?

We offer a variety of course options all year round, including morning- or afternoon-only courses, which you can find here.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

Students will need access to a laptop with a webcam, as well as stable internet connection (15mbps connection or better is recommended). They should bring their own headphones or earphones.

Will my 9-year-old be working with 17-year-olds?

All of the courses are designed with a particular age range in mind and we are often able to split larger groups into smaller groups based on thier age range. Usually the age span in a group working with one specific tutor is no more than 2 to 3 years.

What about disruptive kids?

It is very important to us that all of the campers have the opportunity to have fun and to get the most out of Fire Tech Camp. Of course we know that kids can be playful and we want this to be a fun environment, very different from school.  We will do our best to engage kids who may find their attention wandering, who may be less keen on one particular activity, or who are due for a runaround outside.

We cannot, however, permit kids to disrupt the camp experience for other kids. Tutors will first let the disruptive child know that their behaviour is not appropriate, and that it is hindering other kids from enjoying the programme.  If the problem persists it will escalate to the camp director, who will decide whether we need to call the parents. Children who are destructive with our equipment or setting, or who prevent other kids from benefitting from the camp will be suspended or expelled from the programme. Of course we would hate to have to do that, but it is important that we provide all of our campers and their families with a productive and safe environment.

How can I be sure my child leaves camp with the right person?

During camp registration, parents will indicate who is authorised to pick up the children. That person will need to show ID to sign the children out. Parents can change the authorised person if necessary by getting in touch with Fire Tech Camp. There is also an option during the booking process where you can indicate if you allow an older child to leave on their own.

Will there be First Aid available at all times?

Yes. There will be a First Aid trained staff member in attendance at every camp session.

Will I get to see what my kids are doing?

For younger children, parents are invited to a Grand Finale Showcase on the final day of week long camps. Details will be available in the information pack you receive before camp. You are always welcome to talk to tutors at the end of the camp, too, and we regularly update our Facebook, YouTube and blog with news of recent camps and courses (of course gaining permissions before publishing any photographs).

I really want to go to Fire Tech Camp but it’s too expensive for me. What can I do?

We don’t want any child to be limited by their economic circumstances and we raise corporate sponsorship to enable us to offer a limited number of scholarships, we have also been able to work with schools and self-fund some places. More about scholarships.

Do you accept childcare vouchers?

Yes we accept childcare vouchers at all our locations – you’ll be asked to select your company when you book – if you don’t see your provider let us know and we’ll register with them ASAP!

Is there are residential option for the camp?

Due to COVID-19, Fire Tech residential courses are on hold for the time being. You can find more info about these courses here.

Can I cancel my course for a refund?

As per our Terms & Conditions:

5. Cancellation
5.1. In the event of cancellation by you, a credit will only be issued if such cancellation is notified in writing to FTC at least one month before the commencement of the Camp. An administration charge of £50 per week per child will be deducted from the credit.  No refunds will be issued and bookings cancelled in the last month prior to the date of the class will not be reimbursed.
5.2. If, for any reason, the Camp is cancelled by FTC, the total liability of FTC will not exceed that proportion of the Fees FTC have actually received.
5.3 Fees are non-returnable for students arriving late, leaving early or missing a day of camp (whether on account of illness or any other cause).  If the course has been booked, then the full fees are payable.

Where can I find the Zoom link for the course?

The Zoom link to your session will be posted by your tutor in your Fire Tech classroom approximately 15 minutes before the session is about to start. What’s the difference between course formats?

 We have five different course formats.

  1. Week-long intensive: these take palace Mon-Fri with a choice of a full day 10am-3pm (including 2 tea breaks and an hour lunch), or a shorter 2 hours a day (for senior courses) or 1.5 hours a day (for junior courses).
  2. After school/ weekends: these take place once a week for 5 weeks, and so in total you have 5 sessions.
  3. Self-guided courses: these are heavily independent learning based, where we give students the course materials which they can follow in their own time. Along with the material, students also have a weekly check-in with a tutor over a live Zoom call to get the student started and answer any questions they may have. This course takes place once a week over a span of 5 weeks.
  4. Experiences: these are one-off sessions around a chosen subject. They ask as a taster session or an introduction to the way classes are taught here at Fire Tech, as well as an introduction to that subject.
  5. Virtual Work Experience: over 5 weeks, students discover what it’s like to work in a range of technology businesses, tackling realistic, industry-specific projects and working directly online with their own human “boss”, who gives them regular check-ins and on-going support throughout. Participants finish with their own portfolio of projects, a tailored skills report and a job reference to take into their future careers. 

What is the difference between the 2 hour and 5 hour sessions?

 Both formats cover similar content.

The 5 hours a day course covers the content in more depth and detail as students have more time with the tutor. The 5 hours a day course works out to cover 20 hours of learning.

The 2 hours a day course is slightly compact as we do try to cover the same content, but over 10 hours of learning.

However, we have seen that students from both formats have similar learning outcomes overall.

Most of our courses, however, are designed for complete beginners and the price usually includes specialist equipment and materials.
