Junior Scratch Coder

Scratch is a block-based visual programming language and website used as an educational tool for coding. In this course, students will explore the basics of computer programming and program design by building some amazing projects in Scratch!
Every student will get hands-on with coding from Day One and learn how to share and collaborate on projects with their peers. We believe that the skills to communicate and work with others are just as important as the technical aspects of programming and that's how great apps and computer programs are made.

Our super savvy and frankly outrageously knowledgeable tutor will demonstrate how advanced coding works in ROBLOX by building out game objects such as power-ups and glowing lights.
You’ll see how to create variables and data and to use coding statements to achieve brand new game effects and mechanics in ROBLOX that will amaze your friends!

Build a Reaction Timer in Scratch

This fun and informative Experience will explore how we use technology to measure time to the millisecond in competitive sports, and how we can measure reaction times. Faster reaction times are better, right? We will begin using coding (the visual programming language called Scratch) to create a fun reaction timer game.
Led by our sports-loving, tech-savvy, super charismatic expert, this interactive session will discuss the concept of timing in sports, as a measure of performance in competitive events like running and swimming. What modern technology is used to measure for how fast we run or how quickly a car can race? What are the advantages of using that technology over human observation? Are lasers really better than humans? We will look at instant replay tools and sensors, timing gadgets and how technologies such as RFID chips help capture timings automatically.
We will introduce Scratch and make a simple ball heading game, as an introduction to measuring and improving our own reaction times.
This Experience is perfect for competitive kids who are interested in learning how technology and sports can work together to help humans run, jump and fly further and faster than ever before. No previous knowledge of coding is required.

Making Games With ROBLOX

This fantastic course is based on the amazingly popular Roblox platform, and introduces budding young designers and developers to the principles of practical game design &amp; development, world building and Lua programming.
Students will first be introduced to Roblox and to Roblox Studio as a platform for creating games. They will build an obstacle course (Obby) game and publish their game for others to play. Next, students will meet programming concepts using Lua, creating custom interactive obstacles for their Obby game. Student will also create their own unique Roblox games and publish them to the Internet for anyone to play!
Using Roblox terrain editor tools, students will then build a basic RPG where they can explore a custom built world and harvest the items they have created.
This course is designed for students aged 9-12 who may or may not have programmed previously. Some may have already played Roblox games, or even made their own. Others may have experience with different game engines or programming languages, whilst there may be some for whom game development and programming is a completely new endeavour.

Build Your Own Text Adventure Game

Did you ever play (read?) a "Choose Your Own Adventure" style book, and think, "I could make one of these!"? If so then this is the Experience for you!


We'll show you how to download and get started using a tool called Twine. This is a browser-based tool and is designed to make it easy for users to create precisely this type of content. As well as showing you how to use Twine, we'll also have suggestions for how to plan your adventure effectively. Once we've shown you the basics then we'll also discuss some of the advanced features of Twine so that you can create the best adventure game possible.
This experience will show you how to make an exciting interactive game in which the reader tells their own story and takes charge of their own character's destiny!

Junior Python Coding

Led by our code-loving instructors, kids will be taught key programming concepts and how to apply them in exciting ways. Use Python to create video games and as a general purpose tool to solve maths and other problems. HackLab Club uses mostly online software so downloads are kept to a minimum.

Create Visual Stories Using Scratch

Have you ever wanted to tell stories in a visual way? Whether by creating animations or narrated stories with illustrations? Then why not do so using Scratch? Let us show you how to get started and you'll be creating new stories before you know it.

We'll take you through ideas for how to organise your story, and how to create it, where to find cool artwork or draw your own and how to add narration, multiple scenes or animations to help tell the story.
You may not realise it but there is actually a whole genre of video games, which are made in exactly this way. Perhaps your own creation will become the next great game in this genre!

Making Video Games with Python

You may already have done our Junior Python course, or you may be taking your first steps with text-based programming. Either way Making Video Games with Python is for you. Students will start off by making some purely text-based games, including a text-based adventure game, that will enable them to get to grips with the basics of the Python language.


The next stage will be to take a deep dive into the PygameZero library for making 2D games. This will include a more in-depth look at common patterns in game programming and give the students a better understanding of how to develop their programs and games, based around making a series of different games to explore different aspects of the process.


The week will culminate in the students developing a game of their own.

Junior Augmented And Virtual Reality

Imagine it. Build it. And go to a brand new place. Students learn how to create immersive environments so they can build what's in their brains.
Virtual Reality (VR) endeavours to simulate real-life situations through the use of three-dimensional computer-generated environments. Augmented Reality (AR) on the other hand is the integration of digital overlays to enhance the physical world around us.
During this course, students will learn about how to use the newest AR &amp; VR creation tools and use them to create and code their own augmented and virtual experiences.
