Course Overview

Explore the power of Creative Mode in Epic Games’ Fortnite by learning to build a digital Escape Room. Escape Rooms are some of the most fun you can have using your brain. Typically, in an Escape Room, teams of like-minded adventure-seekers solve puzzles and fiendish tasks under a strict time limit, all trying to “escape the room”, “avoid the zombies” or “discover the treasure”. And sometimes all of the above!

Now Fortnite’s Creative Mode engine allows us to make our own environments, game scenarios and rules of play, and we can try our hand at learning how to build an Escape Room.

Led by our Fortnite-loving, escape-room-building genius, tutors, you’ll think of different ways to set tests and trials for your Fortnite friends. We’ll explore how to set up logic puzzles, mazes and clues, and make your creation available to others. If we’re clever about it, you’ll practice some problem solving and computational skills thinking too.

Is Fortnite educational?

Although Fortnite is mainly designed to be an entertaining game, it also has a number of features that lend themselves to wider educational ideas. In order to build Escape Rooms in Fortnite you need to do various things, plan out what puzzles will be needed, sequence them into a suitable order, create the puzzle content, build the puzzles in Fortnite and configure other parts of the game to make your puzzle work. Solving multi-step problems like this is a very powerful way of developing your problem-solving skills

What is an escape room?

In real life, Escape Rooms are room-sized multi-step puzzles that you escape from by finding solutions to the puzzles. In this Experience, you will be recreating such a puzzle using the popular game Fortnite.

What skills will I learn?

You will learn a number of skills specific to Fortnite around building structures that have various interactive elements. In addition, you will also get to practice problem-solving skills that aren’t specifically tech-related but are applicable to a much wider range of problems.

What if I can’t get the software onto my computer before the Experience happens?

This Experience is mostly taught in a webinar-style so you won’t need to have Fortnite installed to learn from the session, if you do have it installed and want to work along at the same time then that’s okay too.
