Ocean Generation asked Fire Tech to bring specially-curated education technology workshops to young people in Antigua in partnership with ABIIT (Antigua and Barbuda Institute of Technology), and UNOPS. This was the youth component of a broader DadliHack hackathon project and our objective was to inspire teenagers.
How we helped
Fire Tech developed and delivered curricula to 14-16 year olds, using block-based coding, Python, and electronics. Students were delighted to discover how to use code to activate sensors, sounds and lights. We set up a computer lab using Raspberry Pi and Pi-Top computers, so that the local schools could use open source resources and continue their learning journey once the workshops were over.
Despite a challenging environment with intermittent power outages, and setting up a completely new computer lab, the project was very successful. Students enjoyed the course and were inspired to look further into coding and into STEM careers and study paths. We delivered the programme again the following year, and became Ocean Generation’s Preferred Partner for youth workshops.
